What are Lumens?
Lumens (lm) are a standard unit of measurement for the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source. The higher the lumen rating, the brighter the light. Lumens quantify the actual brightness produced, rather than the energy consumed (which is measured in watts). For example, a 100-watt incandescent bulb may produce around 1600 lumens, while an energy-efficient LED can achieve the same brightness with far less power.
In lighting design, lumens are crucial for determining how much light is needed for specific spaces, whether it’s illuminating a boat’s deck, a pathway, or indoor living areas. For outdoor or marine environments, understanding lumens helps select the right brightness to ensure safety, visibility, and ambiance without over-illumination.
